On the Rhetorical Devices of an American Farmer - Literature Essay Samples
J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur has been praised for defining the American way of life. In one of his works, Letters From an American Farmer, he attempts to answer the question ââ¬Å"What is an American?â⬠In an excerpt from that work, On the Situations, Feelings, and Pleasures of an American Farmer, he explains what it truly means to be a farmer in colonial America. Crevecoeur also contrasts the traditional American farmerââ¬â¢s life with the traditional European city life. Within the excerpt, Crevecoeur uses several rhetorical devices to support his idea that living a farmerââ¬â¢s life is much more rewarding than being a city dweller. The main idea of the essay is that a farming life is superior to a city life, and the author tries to convince his audience of this fact by using personal experiences. He first describes the farm, house, and barn that he inherited from his father. Then, Crevecoeur explains how satisfying it is to live on land that has a sentimental family value, and to follow in his fatherââ¬â¢s footsteps. He also describes how it brings him joy to know his son will live in his footsteps, ââ¬Å"I am now doing for [my son], I say, what my father formerly did for meâ⬠(Hector St.John de Crà ©vecoeur, J.). By using this personal experience to prove the benefits of a rural life, Crevecoeur effectively appeals to the readerââ¬â¢s emotional side. His audience is more likely to agree with his points because they feel an emotional connection with his story. Another way Crevecoeur convinces his audience that a farming life is better than a city life is by contrasting the two lifestyles. He explai ns how he feels that he has ââ¬Å"freedom of action, freedom of thoughtsâ⬠(Hector St.John de Crà ©vecoeur, J.) and, throughout the essay, he continually reinforces the idea that he is truly happy with his simple life in the country. Then, the author explains how troublesome it can be to live in the city because you often have to be tied down to landlords. This idea is reinforced through the rest of the essay when Crevecoeur speaks of the excessive materialism of most city dwellers. When this comparison is made, the reader can easily see how living in the country is superior to living in the city. Metaphors are also an effective rhetorical strategy used in the essay. In one instance, the author compares soil to life, because both are incredibly vital. Crevecoeur explains how ââ¬Å"[soil] feeds, it clothes us; from it we draw even a great exuberancy, our best meat, our richest drink.â⬠Here, Crevecoeur is trying to explain how just like anyone is useless without life, American farmers are useless without precious soil. He is also implying that a city dweller will never know the joys pure, rich soil can provide. With the use of this metaphor, Creveoeurââ¬â¢s audience can paint a clear picture of how valuable soil is to famers, and how valuable a farming life can be. Crevecoeur uses another metaphor later in the essay. This one compares bees to life, because bees have similar properties and components of life. Like societies, bees are affected by ââ¬Å"their government, their industry, their quarrels, their passionsâ⬠. The bees are also used as a symbol for labor. The industrious bees of Crevecoeurââ¬â¢s farm mimic the industrious people who often work on farms. Again, the use of a metaphor and symbol helps the reader to paint a clear picture of Crevecoeurââ¬â¢s ideas. The use of rhetorical strategies is crucial to the essay because it allows the author to effectively communicate an idea to his audience. Crevecoeur skillfully uses rhetorical strategies to convince his audience that a farmerââ¬â¢s life is superior to a city life. A mixture of personal experiences, comparisons, and metaphors all help support the authorââ¬â¢s idea. Besides being functional, the strategies Crevecoeur uses also add literary flair to the essay. The main thesis of Crevecoeurââ¬â¢s On The Situation, Feelings, and Pleasures of an American Farmer is that living a simple life is rewarding. This assertion has a great deal of validity to it. Many other people agree that living in a small, rural town can be wholesome, less stressful, and gives people a sen se of community. Evidence from literature and history prove that Crevecoeurââ¬â¢s assertion is true. The novel, North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, is one work of literature that supports Crevecoeurââ¬â¢s ideas. In this novel, a character moves from the countryside to the industrial city. In her new environment, she finds that city folk are cold and unfriendly, while her comrades back in the country were caring and compassionate. Here, urban and rural lives are being directly contrasted. On the other hand, some cities can offer opportunities, promote technological advancements, and be centers for culture. One of these cities was ancient Rome. During ancient times, Rome was the home of dozens of independent thinkers. It was the ââ¬Å"hub of commerce, trade, politics, culture and military mightâ⬠(Roman Roads). The city itself provided a space for these thinkers to collaborate and inspire each other. In this case, the city would be superior to the country because it nourished creativity. Rome, however, should be considered an exception. The majority of cities do not function as well as this ancient community did. Most cities are home to poverty and filth. This poverty and filth was explained in great detail in Upton Sinclarââ¬â¢s novel, The Jungle. In this novel, a foreign family moves to an American city in hopes of being exposed to more opportunities. Upon moving there, the family realizes that the reality of urban life is not what they expected. They are tr icked by wealthy business owners, and suffer health problems because of the bad living conditions. One family member even drowns in the filth accumulated in the streets. The novel as a whole provides evidence to prove that typically, city life would not be preferred over a rural life. Clearly, there is evidence that gives Crevecoeurââ¬â¢s claims value. It is evident from works of literature that usually, a farming life is preferred over an industrial life. Because Crevecoeurââ¬â¢s ideas are shared by notable authors, there had to be some truth in it. Although there have been some exceptional cities throughout history, more often than not they are centers for poverty. This proves that the ideas Crececoeur brought up in his essay are true. Even professionals today agree with the points that were brought up in On the Situations, Feelings, and Pleasures of an American Farmer. Many psychologists agree that working on a farm, or even a small garden, can have a positive affect on oneââ¬â¢s mental health. Also, historians have presented evidence that shows how corrupt the cities of Crevoecourââ¬â¢s time were. Most people have come to the conclusion that living in a rural town is less stressful than living in the city. Anyone who has experienced the joys of a p eaceful landscape knows that cities do not compare. A psychologist, Kim Hermanson explains how beneficial this can be on her website. Here, she describes how on her Iowa farm she remembers ââ¬Å"planting, growing, and digging [her] hands into rich soilâ⬠, and how fond those memories were (Hermanson, Kim). She also explains how, even though she moved to the city, her heart is still at her farm. Then, the author discusses how having deeply rooted memories of nature allows her to make light of difficult situations. A person who never spent time in a rural town would never know this joy. This reinforces the ideas that were brought up in the excerpt from Letters From an American Farmer. In the essay, Crevecoeur uses soil as a metaphor for life. Clearly, soil is as important as Crevecoeur claims because a psychologist so many years later believes so too. Obviously, some of the experiences that are had on farms can not also be had in cities. Although cities do provide some unique opportunities, a life on a farm is much more rewarding. Benjamin Franklin had this view and explained it in one of his more famous quotes. In this quote he states what he thinks are the three ways to acquire wealth. The first is through war, the second is by commerce, and ââ¬Å"The third by agriculture, the only honest way,â⬠(qtd. in Eischen, Faith). In this statement it is clear that Franklin believes that a simple farmerââ¬â¢s life is ideal. Historians have also found that cities, especially those during colonial times, were incredibly corrupt. In a book that references the 1700ââ¬â¢s the author does acknowledge that cities fostered innovation, but explains how ââ¬Å"While many had a keen sense of business, others were often unethical Piracy, smuggling, and privateering were all common practicesâ⬠(Moss, Joyce, and George Wilson). This sh ows how a city life would be undesirable. A traditional farmerââ¬â¢s life would surely be chosen over the city life described here. The evidence presented suggests that pursuing a life in an agriculturally centered town is in fact more rewarding than living in the city. Psychologists have explained how living in a rural place can reduce stress, and historians have found that cities throughout time have been harsh places to live. This belief was displayed in a famous essay from colonial America. Indeed, in On the Situations, Feelings, and Pleasures of an American Farmer, Crevecoeur explores the life of a simple American farmer and shares the joys he experienced while living on his own farm in his agrarian community. He also implies the idea that a traditional urban life would not be as rewarding as a rural life. This claims made in the essay should be taken seriously, because there is credible evidence that supports them. Bibliography Eischen, Faith. Benjamin Franklin Series: Pt. 1 The Statesman. Politics Administration Dichotomy Essay - 752 Words
Administration and Politics Dichotomy Advantages and Disadvantages Abstract By discussing some of the advantages and disadvantages of administration and politics dichotomy, an opinion of whether it is useful or impossible will be made. Wilsonââ¬â¢s politics administration dichotomy refers to the idea that administrative decisions need to be made without political influence. One argument to this is that politics has transformed, letââ¬â¢s say, the role of a city manager from a neutral expert to a problem solver and dichotomy should be replaced with an expanded base of professional values for them. Advantages and Disadvantages of Politics and Administration Dichotomy An advantage of having politics and administration dichotomy is thatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It also shields administrators from scrutiny and serves the interests of elected officials who can pass responsibility for unpopular decisions to administrators. This strict separation of policy makers and service deliverers can lower the quality of governance and service. Then there is the topic of ethics. Neither professional standards nor individual conscience can be alone the framework for public administrative ethics but both are present. So, the downside of dichotomy is there would not be a flow of ideas and concerns between the politicians and the administrators. I think dichotomy is almost impossible to have when it comes to politics and administration, but that word should be replaced by a set of rules and values that both can follow. The politicians should set the goal and the public administrators pave the path. I believe there needs to be communication between the two on certain topics as well. I like to use analogies, so the one that comes to mind is the relationship between officers and NCOs in the army. Officers (being the politician) and NCOs (being the public administrators) need to have a professional relationship. The officer comes to an NCO with a task (goal, mission, policy, etc.). It is the NCOââ¬â¢s job to make sure his or her soldiersââ¬â¢ (which would be the public in this case) accomplish the task. We were riding our bikes home from cheerleading practice one day when Elly, my sister, decided to speed ahead of me by only maybe twenty seconds maximum, then the only thing I saw was her purse fly up into the air and my stomach immediately dropped, I had a bad feeling and I knew that something had happened. We will write a custom essay sample on Live Everyday as if it Were Your Last or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I hurried over to see only her seemingly lifeless body lying on the pavement. I couldnââ¬â¢t breathe, I honestly thought she was dead, my mind started racing. What would I do without my sister? She was all I had left, I couldnââ¬â¢t bear the thought of living a day without her. Paramedics arrived after what seemed like hours, then rushed her to the hospital. I stayed right by her side for eleven days as she stayed in critical condition, four of those with her in a coma. It was a miracle that she lived through the night, let alone eleven days. After the day of the accident, nothing was ever the same for me, every aspect of life seemed different. I realized that she should have died, but God gave her a second chance, which most people donââ¬â¢t get. I realized life could end for anyone at any given minute. So I look at every moment Iââ¬â¢m blessed with as if it really were my last. The number one hero in my life has always been and always will be, my grandmother. She was the only person in the world I could tell anything and everything to without feeling ashamed or judged. She was always so positive about everything, even in the hardest times when it seemed like nothing would ever get better. She always reminded me that things will get better, and to look for one speck of good and it will always outweigh the bad, as long as you have something to go back to, or look forward to. It was like she always knew exactly what to say to make me laugh when I could barely smile. I am grateful that I had a woman like her to look up to while I was growing up, and when I have children, and grandchildren I will always give them the same advice she gave me. Keep your head up, stay strong, and keep moving. These are the words I think of every morning when I wake up and every night before I go to sleep. It was very hard on me when she passed away, but I try to honor her every wa y I can. I always try to apply her philosophy to my everyday life. My sister and my grandmother both made me realize that life is short and precious, so live, laugh, and love every single day. I always try to make the right decisions and never let the people that mean the most to me slip away. Iââ¬â¢ve learned how to make the most of my time, and to do exactly what I want to do without listening to anyone elseââ¬â¢s opinions, because they have their own life to live. I feel like I have been through so much more than anyone could possibly imagine, in the past four years, and it has made me a stronger, harder individual. Even though I have had a lot of bad experiences, they have made me who I am today and I can honestly say I am happy with my life, and if my life did end today, I could say that I lived my life to the fullest, even though it has just begun.

Essence of Effective Communication
Essence of Effective Communication Free Online Research Papers Communication is the key to a successful idea, and/or organization. Keeping in mind that communication entails outgoing and ingoing information that is both delivered and received in a lucrative manner. The two golden rules to communicating effectively are: Organize thoughts in your mind before sharing them with others. Communication is collaborative, not competitive. Leaders of today are the vehicles of a successful exchange of ideas, and are looked to for understanding as well as motivating, leading and keeping the vision alive. In this paper I will show comparison, while contrasting three different models of effective communication, illustrating five tools that leaders can use to improve their communication skills. Essence of Effective Communication No matter how brilliant and invaluable your idea, it is worthless unless you can share it with others. For this reason, effective communication is crucial at every level of an organization. However, the ability to communicate effectively does not come easily to many people, and it is a skill that requires practice. We begin practicing our communication skills even before we learn to walk. A newborn child communicates by crying, but it slowly learns to mimic its parents speech. Eventually, the child discovers that certain speech patterns elicit different responses; one of the joys of parenting is trying to decipher the meaning behind certain ââ¬Å"words.â⬠Slowly, through trial and error, the child learns to manipulate sounds to get what it wants, and as the child develops, this active oral practice leads to more nuanced and fluid conversations. In short, the child learns effective communication. (Sussil, 2002.) To effectively communicate a complex idea, however, requires skills beyond elementary conversation. There are two golden rules to follow. -Organize thoughts in your mind before sharing them with others. This rule involves decoding and encoding before and during a two-way conversation, as in the Interactional Model. One idea often prompts a torrent of others. In order to share your ideas, you must first shape them coherently. Organization is important, because it creates a pattern for your listener, allowing him or her to grasp the larger picture intuitively. This allows the listener to focus on the details of your message, without struggling to understand how you went from Point A to Point B. As a thought experiment, imagine that a colleague has asked you for directions to the airport. Write them down. Your directions will probably look something like: -Drive west half a mile on Aurora. -Take a left on Madison. -At the third light, turn right and follow Dexter for 2-3 miles. -Get on the interstate, heading south. Now, with a pair of scissors, cut each line of instructions into a small strip of paper. Jumble the strips up and arrange them in a completely random order, then give them to your colleague. Even with mixed-up directions, s/he should have no trouble reaching the airport, right? After all, your directions are complete and accurate. Not a single step is missing. The problem, of course, is that your directions are also completely unorganized, rendering them useless. Your colleague will find it impossible to focus on your message itself, because he or she will struggle to follow your messages structure (or lack thereof). (Wright, 2003.) For this reason, practicing the tool of listening for the content of the message to be reflected from the listener, would prove to be effective if the communication is rendered unorganized. -Communication is collaborative, not competitive. As noted in the Linear Model, where communication is only one-way, thrusting your idea on others mars the beauty and integrity of conversation. Communication is in some ways like a dance; each partner plays off the other, basing his or her steps on the other persons, while simultaneously maintaining a certain amount of individuality. Communication is a two-way process involving an exchange of ideas. If you try to make it one-way, you prevent this exchange and will eventually frustrate the other person. You may also frustrate yourself, if you read the other persons lack of verbosity as disinterest in the conversation, rather than an inability to get a word in. The hallmark of effective communication is the coherent verbal projection of your ideas, so that your listener receives the message that you intend to send. By observing these two rules, you will reduce miscommunication and misunderstandings. (Hall, 2000.) With this goal, the practice of noting the speakerââ¬â¢s cues, both verbal and nonverbal the communication will not only remain effective, but will continue following the Interactional and Transactional models of communication, where the conversation flows two-ways, in both listening and leading. In a world with so much information available, why do employees still complain that companies are under-communicating? Can leaders, who rose in the hierarchy due to their ability to talk, learn the value of listening? With the speed of information exchange growing exponentially, how can we slow down to have the deeper, more meaningful conversations that are so critical in the age of knowledge management and learning organizations? These are just a few examples of todayââ¬Ës barriers to effective communications. Without impactful communications, companies will not be able to attract, retain and inspire the employee. Inspire because without inspiration, there is no commitment. Without commitment, there is no discretionary effort. And without that critical extra effort, a company cannot achieve or maintain its competitive edge. (Ashton, 2002.) Now, more than ever, leaders need to think of themselves as communication vehicles. In the past leaders were often promoted based on their ability to talk. Now there is a greater expectation for leaders to be great listeners to their employees, their customers, and other stakeholders. The job of leadership today is not just to make money. Itââ¬Ës to make meaning. For this reason, leaders must become proficient in listening, as well as communicating in a transactional and Interactional form. Because practicing reflecting back to the speaker what one thought they heard, and listening for the feelings of the speaker, a leader is providing a continual transaction of communication to take place, while clarifying understanding. The importance of this new role, and the inadequacy many leaders may feel, is evident in the increase in executive coaching consultants and training programs that are designed to increase these skills. Today senior leadership must not only be able to clearly formulate their vision for the organization, but also to convincingly communicate it such that employees will want to commit to it. (Frost, 2004.) Under these conditions a leader has demonstrated to the listener a skill of responding to the feelings of the speaker. If I may repeat, reflecting back to the speaker what you think you are hearing is essential in ensuring that you have received the information the speaker is trying to convey, and that comprehension is clarified. One example that comes to mind is from PLATOââ¬â¢S REPUBLIC (1992) in Book I, where Socrates defends his account on what justice is by his definition. Questioned by Thrasymachus, Socrates states his position that justice is the advantage of the established rule. Thrasymachus restates to the speaker in his own words what he thought the speaker said, thus allowing the speaker to respond to further clarify the message being sent (Hersey, Blanchard, Johnson, 2001, p.251) ââ¬Å"And a law is correct if it prescribes what is to the rulersââ¬â¢ own advantage and incorrect if it prescribes what is to their disadvantage? Is that what you mean?â⬠(Reeve, 1992, p.15) Ashton, John. (2002.) Barriers to Communication. New York Publishing. Frost, Amanda. (2004.) The Importance of Communication. BB Press House. Hall, Martin. Activity Based Cost accounting system Math Problem
Activity Based Cost accounting system - Math Problem Example In this case study, the supporting excel computations show that overhead using the traditional cost accounting procedure resulted only P137,994.00 for Lever, P22,079.04 for Spring, and finally P 16,559.28 for pump products. Total manufacturing cost also under the traditional or old fashioned cost accounting procedure resulted to the usual Direct Materials cost of the products P 510,000.00 for Lever, P163,200.00 for Spring, and P 139,200.00 for Pump. Another accounting cost for resulting from the Traditional Cost Accounting procedure is the Regular item Direct labor of P 2,160,000.00 for Lever, P163,200.00 for Spring and again P16,560.00 for Pump. The total manufacturing cost under the Traditional method is the sum of Direct Materials, Direct labor and Overhead. P2,807,994.00 for Lever, P348,479.04 for Spring, and finally P 172,319.28 for pump products. Under the Activity Based Costing, The first cost driver is called VOLUME DRIVER showing amount of P 286,000.00 for Lever, P45,760.00 for Spring and P 34,320.00 for Pump. Another driver in this systems is the PURCHASING DRIVER. The purchasing cost for Lever products is P 14,810,000.00 and P2,369,600 for Spring and, the last item, P 1,777,200.00 for Pump. The next driver is the SET UP driver. Set up driver cost are P 38,533,000.00 and P 6,165,280.00 for Spring and of course P 4,623,960.00 for the last item, Pump. The cost drivers are higher than the total manufacturing cost of the traditional cost accounting system. In this new system, the cost factors can easily be traced to determine what the effects of these costs are to over all manufacturing operations. Some cost activities that will not help in the manufacturing process but sometimes, their costs are included in the factory cost of production in error. The Purchasing cost driver will display if the inventory cost is too high or too low or even unnoticed thus affecting the decision making process of management. Hope by Emily Dickinson Essay Example for Free
Hope by Emily Dickinson Essay Can you imagine life with out hope? I think Emily Dickinson may have used hope a lot in her life and thatââ¬â¢s why she wrote this wonderful poem, to inspire those without hope to give them a perspective from a beautiful bird that hope can change your life in any way you dream it. I choose to analyze the famous poem ââ¬Å"hopeâ⬠by Emily Dickinson, Such an interesting and mysterious poet she lived her entire life in Amherst, Massachusetts, only two of her poems where published in her life time, she died in 1886, she was never married and live most of her life as a recluse. In this poem Dickinson uses imagery and metaphors to describe, ââ¬Å"hope is the thing with feathers.â⬠Stanza One In the poem ââ¬Å"hopeâ⬠is the thing with feathers by Emily Dickinson, I love how Dickson compared the idea of hope as a bird or ââ¬Å"featherâ⬠I think the feather symbolizes freedom as in with hope you can fly away and be free, it examines the ideas of hope as a free spirit. She uses an imaginary metaphor to describe why hope is the thing with feathers. In the first line she uses a bird to create a clear image of a free spirit, a bird flying freely reaching what ever it wants, by using hope as a bird this metaphor is saying if you have hope you can fly to where ever it is you dream of. By giving hope feathers it gives the reader an idea or illusion of hope flying freely. By hope having feathers it is like a free home, flying to a new place. In the second line that says ââ¬Å"That perches in the soulâ⬠I believe she means the hope comes from the spirit, from very deep down in your heart. She is using another metaphor comparing a bird sitting on its perch, as our spirit is or where hope sits. In the third line where Dickinson speaks of singing a tune without words, that never stops at all, I see the song as being hope, that the bird is continuously singing its praise of hope even without knowing the words or the meaning of the song, giving us all hope that even if we donââ¬â¢t know the song or the words we too can sing a song of hope. Ending the first stanza with ââ¬Å"and never stops at allâ⬠showing that this song is never ending and available to all, it never stops. Stanza Two ââ¬Å"And sweetest in the gale is heardâ⬠tells of the birds song as the sweetest of all songs, ââ¬Å"And sore must be the stormâ⬠showing that when we need hope the most, through the worst of lifeââ¬â¢s storms, we can still hear that sweet song of hope. In line seven Dickinson shows that without hope we could be crushed by the storm, again showing a metaphor. I believe it means that without hope you would be without wings, no way to soar above your conflicts or hope of escaping, without hope its like you have a broken wing and cannot fly anywhere. The antagonist of the poem is the one who could abash the little bird, taking away all hope, representing problems of the world the negativity, stress, financial, relationship difficultyââ¬â¢s of everyday life, being the hammer bearing down on us, causing pain and discomfort. In line eight that says ââ¬Å"That kept so many warmâ⬠means that hope has brought people through a lot of things, through the cold and hurtful times. Hope is like a blanket in the winter you need it to stay warm without it you will freeze to death. Stanza Three By Dickinson saying ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve heard it in the chilliest landsâ⬠I see this as yet another reason to have hope and that hope is obtainable in even the ââ¬Å"chilliestâ⬠of lands, continuing with ââ¬Å"And on the strangest seaâ⬠that hope can reach any distance. As Dickinson ends her poem with ââ¬Å"Yet, never, in extremity, it asked a crumb of me.â⬠Dickinson shows us hope is free it doesnââ¬â¢t coast a thing, that it comes from within, not at a store or a mall, hope is what you make it, it dose not run away from you, its there when ever you need or want it, you donââ¬â¢t need money to use it, all you need is the right mind set then you can just take it out of your pocket and use it whenever you need it, its that simple. As you can see hope is the only thing you need, fear is the opposite. Hope doesnââ¬â¢t cost anything, all you need is a little faith and all your dreams will come true, hope is a free gift so why not use it every second of every day. Hope is used in even the saddest places to make them happier. The poorest person with hope is happier than the richest without hope. Some of the richest people used hope to get where they are now with just a little bit of faith and hope, that is all you will ever need in life, because it provides you with everything you will ever need. Hope exists for everyone; there is not one-person that canââ¬â¢t use hope. I use hope everyday and Iââ¬â¢m extremely happy. If you have hope you can fly to your dreams in life, for example when we were all little someone asked us what we wanted to be when we grow up and no matter what that kid said he or she didnââ¬â¢t have a doubt in their mind that they were not going to be what they dreamed but as we get older we start to loose hope and focus more on ââ¬Å"realityâ⬠. But the Dickinson shows us how to escape reality and dream a little. I think every one should use hope and read ââ¬Å"hopeâ⬠is the thing with feathers because it may cause you to see hope every day of your life and change your life forever.

Plato :: essays research papers
Few definite details are known of Plato's life. He was born in Athens c. 427 BC and was the youngest son of Ariston, of an old and wealthy family. It is claimed that his real name was Aristocles, with "Plato" (meaning "the broad") being a nickname given to him because of his wrestler's physique. He served in the last years of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, and after democracy was restored in Athens in 403 BC he hoped to enter politics. However, the realities of political life as well as the execution of his mentor Socrates in 399 BC drove him to abandon this goal. After the death of Socrates, Plato left Athens and traveled in Italy, Sicily and Egypt, where he learned the function of a water clock. In Italy he came in contact with the ideas of Pythagoras, which gave him a new appreciation of mathematics. After serving again in the military, he returned to Athens in 387 BC and founded his Academy, which he presided over until his death in 347 BC and which survived for nearly a thousand years after. His works include discussions of mathematics, ethics, science and philosophy, usually in the form of dialogues. Some of the most famous are the Republic, Phaedo, and Symposium. Famous quotations by Plato: A hero is born among a hundred, a wise man is found among a thousand, but an accomplished one might not be found even among a hundred thousand men. All men are by nature equal, made all of the same earth by one Workman; and however we deceive ourselves, as dear unto God is the poor peasant as the mighty prince. Courage is a kind of salvation. Courage is knowing what not to fear. Cunning... is but the low mimic of wisdom. Democracy... is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder; and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequals alike. Democracy passes into despotism. Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws. He was a wise man who invented beer. He who is of calm and happy nature will hardly feel the pressure of age, but to him who is of an opposite disposition youth and age are equally a burden. Honesty is for the most part less profitable than dishonesty. Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion obtains no hold on the mind.

Edgar Schein Model Essay
The term ââ¬Å"Organization cultureâ⬠refers to the values and beliefs of an organization. The principles, ideologies as well as policies followed by an organization form its culture. It is the culture of the workplace which decides the way individuals interact with each other and behave with people outside the company. The employees must respect their organizationââ¬â¢s culture for them to deliver their level best and enjoy their work. Problems crop up when individuals are unable to adjust to a new work culture and thus feel demotivated and reluctant to perform. Who is Edgar Schein ? Edgar Henry Schein born in 1928 is a renowned professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management who has studied extensively in the field of organization management. Edgar Schein model of organization culture According to Edgar Schein ââ¬â Organizations do not adopt a culture in a single day, instead it is formed in due course of time as the employees go through various changes, adapt to the external environment and solve problems. They gain from their past experiences and start practicing it everyday thus forming the culture of the workplace. The new employees also strive hard to adjust to the new culture and enjoy a stress free life. Schein believed that there are three levels in an organization culture. 1. Artifacts The first level is the characteristics of the organization which can be easily viewed, heard and felt by individuals collectively known as artifacts. The dress code of the employees, office furniture, facilities, behavior of the employees, mission and vision of the organization all come under artifacts and go a long way in deciding the culture of the workplace. Organization A No one in organization A is allowed to dress up casually. Employees respect their superiors and avoid unnecessary disputes. The individuals are very particular about the deadlines and ensure the tasks are accomplished within the stipulated time frame. Organization B The employees can wear whatever they feel like. Individuals in organization B are least bothered about work and spend theirà maximum time loitering and gossiping around. The employees use derogatory remarks at the work place and pull each other into controversies. In the above case, employees in organization A wear dresses that exude professionalism and strictly follow the policies of the organization. On the other hand, employees in organization B have a laid back attitude and do not take their work seriously. Organization A follows a strict professional culture whereas Organization B follows a weak culture where the employees do not accept the things willingly. 2. Values The next level according to Schein which constitute the organization culture is the values of the employees. The values of the individuals working in the organization play an important role in deciding the organization culture. The thought process and attitude of employees have deep impact on the culture of any particular organization. What people actually think matters a lot for the organization? The mindset of the individual associated with any particular organization influences the culture of the workplace. 3. Assumed Values The third level is the assumed values of the employees which canââ¬â¢t be measured but do make a difference to the culture of the organization. There are certain beliefs and facts which stay hidden but do affect the culture of the organization. The inner aspects of human nature come under the third level of organization culture. Organizations where female workers dominate their male counterparts do not believe in late sittings as females are not very comfortable with such kind of culture. Male employees on the other hand would be more aggressive and would not have any problems with late sittings. The organizations follow certain practices which are not discussed often but understood on their own. Such rules form the third level of the organization culture.

A Comparison Of Writings By Harriet Jacobs And Frederick...
A Comparison of Writings by Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglass In this paper I will compare the writings of Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglass. I will touch on their genre, purpose, content, and style. Both authors were born into slavery. Both escaped to freedom and fought to bring an end to slavery, each in their own way. Both Jacobs and Douglass have a different purpose for their writings. Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglass were both slaves that wrote about their struggles and pain during their years of slavery. Both stories were the same but also very different. Both Jacobs and Douglass were born into slavery. The stories were written by authors that finally gained their freedom from slavery. Jacobââ¬â¢s wrote ââ¬Å"Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girlâ⬠and Frederick Douglass wrote, ââ¬Å"Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slaveâ⬠.
